Field Performance Recording and Bull Production

Animal recording represents the base for the development of livestock production at the national and state level. Field Performance Recording involves collection of information on the animals belonging to the farmers, and will depend on the necessity, facilities for evaluation, application of the results and finance. Information on growth, reproduction and milk yield are primary, with milk yield the most important.

Regular measurements of the milk yield of cows will help for crossbred / indigenous Bull Production as future sires, to provide information for correct feeding and management, support in genetic selection decisions, assist conservation and development of local breeds, provide records for bull mother recruitment, generate data for progeny testing and breed comparison, make available data for planning of livestock developmental activities.

With expansion of Artificial Insemination programme, the demand for the semen straws especially the crossbred semen has been increasing every year. To meet the requirement in future, it has been decided to produce crossbred bulls in our state by selecting high yielding (elite) crossbred cows from field and inseminating them with semen of proven sire procured from NDDB. The male progenies born out of the inseminations will be selected basing on their dams’ yield and reared in the institutional farms as future sires for donating semen. In this way the state will be self dependant so far the demand of crossbred bull semen is concerned. Moreover, with further implementation of progeny testing programme the state will be able to produce some proven sires, the semen of which can be used for future bull production programme and supplied to other states as per their need.

Animal recording for bull production has two components

  • Identification and recording of elite bull mothers,
  • Rearing of the male calves up to breeding age.

As the programme aims at selection of elite mothers for bull production in the field, it was decided to restrict FPRS in selected districts like Bargarh, Puri, Cuttack and Jagatsingpur. It will also help for proper monitoring and supervision of other prgramme.

The blocks identified in these districts for taking up the programme are-
Cuttack      Niali, Kanatapada,. Nischintakoili and Salipur
Jagatsingpur      Jagatsingpur, Balikuda, Nuagaon and Raghunathpur
Bargarh      Bargarh and Atabira
Puri      Astaranga and Kakatpur

A detail action plan will be prepared by OLRDS for taking up the programme in field areas of above blocks.
