Livestock production in Orissa is the major source of supplementary income for the farming community in Orissa. Besides providing nutritional food, draught power is extensively used in agriculture operation and rural transport.. To cater the need of the time the Breeding services in Orissa needs strengthening With the financial assistance made available to the state SIA the breeding services of the state will improve so also the Breeding network of infrastructures.
At present there are 2400 (2003-2004) Static A.I. Centres and 500 are mobile centre functioning in the state. Each centre is manned either by a Veterinary Assistant Surgeon or a Live Stock Inspector in Government A.I. Center where in OMFED it is manned by trained A.I. Workers. Each AIC is provided with BA35/BA20, where as in mobile center potable Cryocans with TA55 (@ One for 5 AIC) has been supplied to provide doorstep services at farmers door.
At present nearly 1875 heads of breedable population are being covered by one AIC. This is very high as compared to an ideal population of 600 to 1000 per AIC, considering the geographical area.
